چکیده

Infants preferentially discriminate native speechsound categories prior to acquiring a large receptive vocabulary, implying a major role for distributional learning strategies in phoneme learning. However, it is unknown how infants extract the vowel phonemes of their language from distributional information in the presence of between-speaker variability in vowel realizations. Before we can ask this question, we must determine whether both indexical and linguistic cues are available to infants in speech processing. We familiarized infants to tokens of a vowel produced by one speaker, and tested their listening preference to trials containing a vowel change produced by the same speaker (linguistic information), and the same vowel produced by a speakers of the same or a different accent (indexical information). Infants noticed linguistic and indexical differences, suggesting that both are salient in infant speech processing. Further research should explore how infants weight these cues in distributional learning of vowel categories.

Indexical and linguistic processing by 12-month-olds: Discrimination of speaker, accent and vowel differences

Infants preferentially discriminate between speech tokens that cross native category boundaries prior to acquiring a large receptive vocabulary, implying a major role for unsupervised distributional learning strategies in phoneme acquisition in the first year of life. Multiple sources of between-speaker variability contribute to children's language input and thus complicate the problem of distr...

Adult listeners' processing of indexical versus linguistic differences in a pre-attentive discrimination paradigm

The human ability to comprehend speech regardless of variation across speakers and accents has long puzzled researchers. Human listeners appear to employ separate mechanisms to cope with speaker versus accent variation. The present study uses event-related potentials (ERP) to test whether such different mechanisms exist at a preattentive level of speech processing. We assessed Australian Englis...

When speaker identity is unavoidable: Neural processing of speaker identity cues in natural speech.

Speech sound acoustic properties vary largely across speakers and accents. When perceiving speech, adult listeners normally disregard non-linguistic variation caused by speaker or accent differences, in order to comprehend the linguistic message, e.g. to correctly identify a speech sound or a word. Here we tested whether the process of normalizing speaker and accent differences, facilitating th...

Speaker Sex Influences Processing of Grammatical Gender

Spoken words carry linguistic and indexical information to listeners. Abstractionist models of spoken word recognition suggest that indexical information is stripped away in a process called normalization to allow processing of the linguistic message to proceed. In contrast, exemplar models of the lexicon suggest that indexical information is retained in memory, and influences the process of sp...

Vowel normalization for accent: A co southern British Engl

Two experiments investigated whether listeners change their vowel categorization decisions to adjust to different accents of British English. Listeners from different regions of England gave goodness ratings on synthesized vowels embedded in natural carrier sentences that were produced in either a northern or southern accent by a single male speaker. A computer minimization algorithm adjusted F...
